Linkage to Education

Coming Attractions

In our on-going effort to provide college outreach to foster and probation youth still in the system and who are thinking about what college is like, we wanted to add to our student (peer-to-peer) newsletter. As some may know, this newsletter is written by older Linkage students targeting youth in group homes, foster homes and in classrooms in the juvenile court schools (places like juvenile hall, etc).

Still, we think there is more to be done, so our next ambitious step is to shoot a video and create CDs to complement the student newsletter. This college orientation video will give a ground level, participant’s eye view of the transition out of one system (foster care or juvenile probation) and into another system (college). The orientation video/CD will be driven by Linkage students with their thoughts and creativity behind it.

On a certain level, Linkage to Education can be a uniquely individual experience, because your expectations and perceptions are being reshaped as you navigate your way into the college experience. Yet Linkage to Education is also a shared experience, because you’re joining a community of youth with common backgrounds. Your past difficulties are not signs that you don’t fit in or that you’re not good enough. Hopefully, this orientation video will help to reshape your perceptions.
